About HCM106 — Legal Aspects of Health Information Management

This course covers various aspects of law and ethics in the healthcare field. Students will study the workings of the American legal system, including private and public law, sources of law, branches of government, and quasi-legal requirements. The course provides an overview of ethics, exploring ethical models, concepts, and theories. Students will learn about ethical decision-making processes and challenges in the healthcare and health information management contexts. The course then delves into legal and ethical issues central to health information management. Topics covered include patient record requirements, confidentiality, informed consent, access to health information, specialized patient records (e.g., drug and alcohol abuse, mental health), and risk management.

Finally, the course focuses on specialized areas of concern in health information management, such as information systems, electronic health records, health care fraud and abuse, and law and ethics in the workplace. The course also explores emerging legal and ethical trends in information technology.

By the end of this course, students will have a solid understanding of the legal and ethical principles and practices that are essential for success in the healthcare industry.
